We have created a multidisciplinary educational project with the mission of enhancing ecological literacy among younger generations, especially students. To this end, we have developed activities tailored to different ages and educational levels, focusing on Agroecology, the Montado, Prehistory, and Alentejo Megalithism.
With the recognition of Freixo do Meio as the Protected Landscape of Montado by the ICNF in 2022, we found it relevant to develop this unique environmental education program. Through the archaeological work ongoing at Montado do Freixo do Meio, we have learned more about the history of this space, as well as aspects of its geography and anthropology. This educational project integrates these insights with the dimension of environmental sustainability.
At Montado do Freixo do Meio, we bring together over 30 years of accumulated knowledge in managing this nearly 600-hectare territory. Our approach, based on the principles of Agroecology and the recognition of science’s role in proper ecosystem management, has positioned us at the forefront of scientific research in these fields and led to regular collaborations with national and international universities and research projects.
We invite you, teachers and students, to step out of the classroom and explore with us the place where all this happens, on a day that will surely be memorable.
Interactive activities tailored to different educational levels, supported by the living laboratory that our Montado represents and the Interpretation Center of Montado and Agroforestry (CIMA). The topics covered include Ecology, Geography, Agronomy, History, and Biology.
A range of activities is provided to help students gain a deeper understanding of our past, contributing to a better comprehension of the present moment and the future. Held at the site of various archaeological works, students will have access to genuine artifacts and replicas and experience the thrill of History being uncovered. All activities are conducted under the guidance of archaeologist Manuel Calado.
