Humanized ecosystems, like the montado, allow for the harvesting of a wide range of foods, with acorns being a notable example. The Sociedade Agrícola do Freixo do Meio, Lda, responsible for the Private Protected Landscape of the Montado do Freixo do Meio, manages this ecosystem to support its ecological evolution while facilitating the collection of various foods.
Acorns, olives, grapes, and other fruits, vegetables, and wild mushrooms from the montado are sold fresh or processed, with special mention given to the olive oil mill, the milling process, the solar dryer, and the bakery. Other foods, such as vegetables, meat, sausages, honey, and fruits, are produced by independent resident projects.
Montado foods are available for purchase at the farm shop (Reception Center – Monday to Friday), at the Sunday Markets, through the online store managed by the independent project Freixo Alimento, or through distributors.
We invite you to enjoy our meals at the Cantina dos Bois or to have a picnic, as well as to sample our wines, olive oils, and other delicacies from the montado, with a special emphasis on acorns. All foods adhere to organic farming regulations (MPB) and are certified by Certiplanet (PT-BIO-04).
The CSA program, Food Sharing, is currently managed by Abel, Cunha e Semedo, Lda (Freixo Alimento), a company formed by project collaborators.
Acorns are the symbol of Montado do Freixo do Meio. Known as “the food of invincible men” due to their unique health benefits, they are a cornerstone of our ecosystem.

It is the “heart” of Monte do Freixo do Meio. It produces bread made with sourdough, traditional Alentejo bread or acorn bread, and other delicacies.
From the richness of the Montado, we produce a range of unique products on the market, such as our red wine, vinegar, olives, tomato derivatives, and even a natural soap!
Meals are part of the experience of exploring the Protected Area, inviting visitors to savor the culinary traditions of Alentejo.
In 1990, the Herdade do Freixo do Meio was producing only wheat and lamb, and no food processing took place. However, fifty years earlier, Freixo do Meio was already producing, processing, and consuming a wide variety of foods.
By returning to the ancestral agricultural and societal model of the Montado, we experienced the effects of the system’s complexity and were impacted by the results: a significant abundance of food.
In thirty years, we have recreated and innovated over five hundred food products from the Agroforestry systems of the Montado do Freixo do Meio, which we share daily with thousands of satisfied customers.
Our foods are primarily processed on the estate, using ingredients produced here under organic farming methods.
We preserve unique knowledge, traditions and foods we rescued from the history of the Montado, such as meats, sausages, cold cuts, bread, food from acorn, vegetables and legumes, olive oil, wine and vegetarian and vegan foods.
Feed yourself with products from a single local source, where you know the farmers and have access to a wide variety of foods and ingredients, reducing your supermarket purchases.
We work to distribute fairly and operate ethically in the market, avoiding commercial speculation while ensuring a decent livelihood for our farmers and partner producers.
We advocate for a relationship where the consumer engages with the farmer’s reality, participating in decisions and shaping the future through the CSA program.

The CSA Program started in 2015, being a pioneer in Portugal. It is a conscious, responsible, proximity model of production and consumption of organic food. It establishes a mutual commitment between consumers and those who do the production, connected by the values of solidarity, and based on the recognition of food as a Common Good.
Trough the subscription of production quotas at a fixed price, weekly or every two weeks you receive a basket with a selection of garden products, meat, eggs, bread, milk, cheese, soup, among many other products, which, are grown, harvested, and transformed at the Herdade do Freixo do Meio, or by partner producers, directly from the farm to your table.
By sharing the crops, it is possible to have safer planning, avoiding therefore the scourge of food waste.
This program is developed by the independent project Freixo Alimento.
