SHARING THE FOOD
To feed from the Montado do Freixo do Meio is to share an essential good which is obtained in agroecological fashion. This means it respects the soils and the natural cycles of fertility, boosts biodiversity, does not use chemicals or transgenics for two decades and promotes the regeneration of the forest.
This agricultural model allows that the meat, vegetables and processed products are possessed with exceptional flavors, freshness and quality, at the same time it provides for a whole community committed to the preservation of this Natural System.
The Organic production of the Montado do Freixo do Meio is certified by Kiwa Sativa (PT-BIO-03)
Representation of the month of November in the Old Missal of Lorvão, 15th century.
A SEVEN CENTURY TRADITION
Representação do mês de Novembro no Missal Antigo do Lorvão, séc. XV
In 1990 the Herdade do Freixo do Meio only produced wheat and lamb and no food was processed. However, if we went back 50 years, dozens of types of food were produced, transformed and consumed at Freixo do Meio.
By returning to the agricultural and social model of the Montado, we experienced the effects brought by the complexification of the natural system and were impacted by the results: a significant abundance of food. In thirty years, we recreated and created more than five hundred types of food originated on the Agro-forestry of Montado do Freixo do Meio, we now share daily with thousands of satisfied customers.
Our food is mostly processed on site, with ingredients produced by us in organic fashion and directly shared by the cooperative.
We preserve unique knowledge, traditions and foods we rescued from the history of the Montado, such as meats, sausages, cold cuts, bread, food from acorn, vegetables and legumes, olive oil, wine and vegetarian and vegan foods.
We advocate for a relationship where the consumer gets involved in the farmer’s reality in decision-making and future preparation through the CSA program.
Over thirty years we created and recreated more than five hundred food products originated in the Agro-forestry of the Montado do Freixo do Meio.
The CSA Program started in 2015, being a pioneer in Portugal.
It is a conscious, responsible, proximity model of production and consumption of organic food. It establishes a mutual commitment between consumers and those who do the production, connected by the values of solidarity, and based on the recognition of food as a Common Good.
Trough the subscription of production quotas at a fixed price, weekly or every two weeks you receive a basket with a selection of garden products, meat, eggs, bread, milk, cheese, soup, among many other products, which, are grown, harvested, and transformed at the Herdade do Freixo do Meio, or by partner producers, directly from the farm to your table.
By sharing the crops, it is possible to have safer planning, avoiding therefore the scourge of food waste.
The principles supporting the Sharing the Harvest CSA Program
This food production model relies on transparency, where all members have privileged access to the activities of the Herdade and build a proximity relationship with us.
Join us building an agricultural model that promotes bountiful production and food security in times of uncertainty.
Have you always wished you had a piece of land? Stand closer to nature and take part on the farm’s daily activities.
Through active and shared agroecology, we work so that the planet continues to be fertile and thriving, while fighting climate change.
Forward planning of the crops allows for a better rationalization of growing and producing foods. Uncertainty of distribution and losses along the way are eliminated because everything is rationally by all members.
